The best way to maintain the optimal temperature and save on energy costs in a home or office is to ensure non-essential equipment is turned off when it is not needed.

Typically this has been achieved ether by giving the specific responsibility to members of staff or by automating the process using time switches or other control systems. However, using people to manually switch off the power supply can be unreliable and time switches cannot easily accommodate the modern working practices based around flexibility and responsiveness.
